The Testament of Ann Lee

The Testament of Ann Lee (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) features the Academy Award-winning score by Daniel Blumberg for Mona Fastvold’s visionary historical drama. The soundtrack presents a radical and immersive reinterpretation of Shaker musical traditions, blending experimental composition, choral improvisation, and original songwriting into a deeply spiritual sonic experience.

Developed in close collaboration with director Mona Fastvold, the music was shaped alongside the film’s choreography and performances, becoming an integral part of its storytelling. Blumberg’s approach draws heavily from the physicality and ecstatic vocal practices of Shaker worship, transforming them into a contemporary experimental sound world.

The score features nearly 100 vocalists, including acclaimed experimental performers such as Maggie Nicols, Phil Minton, Shelley Hirsch, and Freya Edmondes, alongside a cast of untrained voices. Together they create a raw, wordless vocal landscape that reflects the intensity and transcendence of communal Shaker expression.

This vocal foundation is enriched with tuned percussion, bell tones, celeste, and avant-garde string arrangements, forming a minimalist yet emotionally charged atmosphere. The soundtrack also includes ten reimagined Shaker hymns performed by the cast, as well as three original compositions, including the closing track “Clothed by the Sun,” performed by Daniel Blumberg and Amanda Seyfried.

Presented as a deluxe double vinyl edition in a gatefold sleeve with printed inner sleeves, the release features artwork by Sebastian Pardo in collaboration with the composer, making it both a musical and visual extension of the film’s artistic vision.
